The International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM) is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the IDRiM Outstanding Dissertation Award.
This award aims to recognize and encourage outstanding early-career researchers whose doctoral dissertations have made significant and original contributions to the field of Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM). Through this award, IDRiM seeks to promote high-quality doctoral research and to support the international visibility and career development of promising young scholars.
1. Eligibility
As a general principle, candidates should be nominated by faculty members.
Self-nominations are also accepted to ensure inclusiveness and accessibility, particularly in cases where a formal nomination may be difficult.
Nominees must satisfy all of the following conditions:
- The nominee must have obtained a Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) within three (3) years of the nomination year.
- The doctoral dissertation must have been formally accepted by the degree-granting institution.
- The dissertation topic must be relevant to Integrated Disaster Risk Management, including (but not limited to):
– Disaster risk assessment and modeling
– Disaster consequence analysis
– Risk communication
– Disaster management and governance
– Resilience and adaptation
– Policy, engineering, and social aspects of disaster risk - The language of the dissertation is not restricted to English.
- Membership in IDRiM is encouraged but not required.
2. Nomination Materials
Evaluation will be based exclusively on the submitted documents. All nomination materials must be submitted in English, except for the doctoral dissertation, which may be written in a language other than English.
Nominees (including self-nominees) must submit the following materials:
- Nomination Letter
– Name of the nominee
– Current affiliation
– Email address
– Year of doctoral degree completion - Dissertation Short Summary (maximum 1,000 words, in English) The summary should clearly explain:
– The significance of the research
– Its originality and innovation
– Its relevance to the IDRiM field - Doctoral Dissertation (PDF)
– The officially accepted full dissertation
– The dissertation may be written in a language other than English - Curriculum Vitae (CV)
– In English
– Including academic background and publication record - Additional requirement for non-English dissertations:
Nominees whose dissertations are written in languages other than English must submit one of the following in English:
– A Long Summary of the Dissertation (up to 20 A4 pages), or
– One or more core peer-reviewed journal articles published or accepted in English that represent the central contribution of the dissertation
Note: The Dissertation Short Summary is mandatory for all nominees.
3. Review Process
- The Award is administered by an Operating Committee appointed by IDRiM.
- For each eligible nomination, the Operating Committee appoints two or more reviewers with relevant subject-matter expertise.
- Reviewers may be selected from within or outside IDRiM, depending on the disciplinary scope of the dissertation.
- Based on the reviewers’ assessments, the Operating Committee deliberates and determines the award recipient.
Selection criteria include:
• Originality and innovation of the research
• Contribution to integrated disaster risk management
• Methodological soundness and scholarly quality
• Clarity and overall quality of presentation
4. Award and Benefits
The award recipient will:
- Receive formal recognition at the IDRiM Annual Conference
- Be invited to give a short presentation based on the doctoral dissertation
- Receive a certificate of recognition
- Be offered an opportunity to publish the dissertation as a monograph in the IDRiM Book Series(Springer Nature), subject to editorial review and possible revisions

- Nomination deadline: 15 May 2026
- Award announcement and presentation: at the forthcoming IDRiM Annual Conference

All nomination materials must be submitted in PDF format. The maximum file size for each uploaded file is 100 MB. After submitting the nomination materials through the online submission form, please notify the IDRiM Secretariat by email that the submission has been completed.
